About this App

Mega (stylised in uppercase as MEGA) is a cloud storage and file hosting service offered by Mega Limited, an Auckland-based company. The service is offered primarily through web-based apps. Mega mobile apps are also available for Windows Phone, Android and iOS.

Mega was created to help curb the privacy issues other cloud storage services seem to be subject to. It is known for it’s security feature where all files are end-to-end encrypted locally before they are uploaded. This prevents anyone (including employees of Mega Limited) from accessing the files without knowledge of the pass key used for encryption. The service was previously noted for a large 50 GB storage allocation for free accounts. Up to 8 TB is available for paid accounts. As of 20 January 2018, Mega claims to have 100 million registered users in more than 245 countries and territories, and more than 40 billion files have been uploaded to the service.

The  features are:

  • You can upload your files and pictures by dragging and dropping
  • 100% Privacy
  • Entropy from mouse movements and keystrokes
  • Data De-duplication
  • No file size limit
  • Private Sharing
  • Sharing folders
  • Multiple File Uploads
  • Folder Upload

Mega Privacy

The company’s slogen is „the privacy company”, so MEGA is a very good solution for them, who want their personal data to be protected. It is a zero-knowledge service, and the protection extends to your shares, too, because you can use private encryption to protect them and make sure only people you authorize can read them.  Mega does not save any of the passwords on its servers, does not have any open door policy to any of the governments all over the world.

File backups are completely painless with MEGA. The MEGA interface is completely web-based and works very similarly to Google Drive and the like. You have a MEGA drive space, where you can create folders, and then simply drag and drop files or folders into your space. There is also a desktop client for Windows, Linux, and Mac that allows you to access your MEGA drive via a standalone application (MEGA iOS app, MEGA Android app, Windows phone app).

The interface itself is very easy to handle, you can add contacts to share files with them, and chat with them, so we can say that ist’s a real -time collaboration. If you want more files to be up- or downloaded, than you can do it as an entire folder, so you dont have to click them one-by-one. It also has add-ons for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. With the help of these add-ons, you can download files in batches without any restrictions.
